The ellipsoid, and the grid laid on it
latitude-ladder and ellipse-normals are the several latitudes of one point; curvature-latitude is the radius that varies with them; series-error is what truncating the series costs; utm-zones, grid-scale, grid-convergence, convergence-profile and arc-to-chord are the grid's own quantities; datum-shifts is what changing the ellipsoid moves; equal-area-latitude and section-trio are the auxiliary latitudes and the normal sections.
Every one of these is the same generator answering a different question, which is why they share a file, a set of colour roles and a set of assertions. Changing it changes all 12.

No map is faithful
Not "no map yet", and not "no map at page size". Gaussian curvature can be computed from inside a surface, a sphere has some and a plane has none, and that closes the question permanently.
What a coordinate refers to
A latitude and a longitude are not a place. They are a claim about a model, and the model has a shape, a position, a set of marked stones and a date — change any one of the four and the ground under the numbers moves by hundreds of metres.
A grid has an origin that is not there
Every published national grid measures from a point in the sea. The British one sits 400 kilometres west and 100 kilometres south of where the projection's own zero is, and moving it changes every coordinate in the country and not one distance or bearing.
The seven parameters, and what each one does
A datum transformation is published as three metres, three arcseconds and one part per million, in three different units — which hides the fact that all seven are the same size of thing. Converted to ground displacement, the scale term beats two of the translations.
A datum is fitted to a region
Forty countries adopted forty ellipsoids, and the usual explanation is that measurement was poor. It was not — a figure fitted to one country beats the global one over that country by a factor of seven, and what it removes is a systematic bias of two metres in every kilometre.
The scale factor of a line
A scale factor is a property of a point and a distance is not measured at a point. The three rules in use for averaging one along a line differ by a hundred metres on a 362-kilometre baseline, and which of them is adequate is decided by the line's direction rather than its length.
The Earth is a sphere, and when it is not
Every essay before this one treated the Earth as a ball, and said so. The flattening is one part in three hundred, which is nothing for a distance, everything for a latitude, and exactly enough to make the most-used projection in the world fail the property in its own name.
The square costs the poles
The cut at 85.0511287798° is the most-quoted number in web mapping and is almost never derived. It is where Mercator's northing equals half the world's width — the condition for a square — and it drops 1,901,487 square kilometres. A two-tile root would have reached 89.786° and dropped 3,558.
