No map of the whole sphere is one to one
Eleven essays establish that no map preserves distance, and every step of that argument needs a distance. There is a second impossibility underneath it that needs nothing at all: a sphere is compact and has no boundary, so a continuous map of it into the page cannot also be one to one. Eighteen library projections, eighteen escapes, and not one of them free.
Two opposite places on the same spot
A projection may be continuous everywhere or one to one everywhere, and the first two rungs price both. What neither says is that the choice is not symmetric: a map that keeps continuity does not lose injectivity somewhere arbitrary. It loses it, always and at minimum, on a pair of places directly opposite each other on the Earth.
Where the control points are
Five rungs fit a library to a map and ask how much to trust the winner. None asks whether the parameters are recoverable at all. On control points along one parallel an equirectangular's standard parallel is not merely hard to find — it is invisible, exactly, and five hundred and twelve points on the same parallel are as blind as eight.
The family is a symmetry, not a shape
Rung seven dissolves the taxonomy: eleven named maps fitted to one perspective formula, six reproduced exactly and five refused, so the developable surface describes how the projections were discovered rather than what they are. What is left is the question it does not ask. If the shapes are not the classification, what is?
The best flat picture is not a map
A set of dots whose separations are as nearly right as separations can be made beats every projection in this collection — by a factor of thirteen on four world cities, and by eight per cent on sixteen. The collapse between those two numbers is not about cartography. It is that a picture of n places has 2n − 3 free numbers and n(n − 1)/2 distances to spend them on.
An average of ellipses is not an ellipse
Rung three integrates distortion over a region and finds the weighting is somebody's opinion. It never asked what was being averaged. An indicatrix is a positive-definite matrix, matrices form a cone rather than a vector space, and the arithmetic average of an equal-area map's indicatrices comes back inflating area by up to 11 per cent.
