Scale distortion is the third failure
A map's stated scale is its scale at one place. Everywhere else it differs, by a factor that no conformal projection can avoid and that neither of the two usual distortion measures reports. It is the failure everybody uses and nobody counts.
A projection written as a condition
Instead of a formula, a sentence: the distance from these two places must be exactly right. The map that satisfies it is found by intersecting two circles, it is exact to five parts in a hundred million million, and it exists over the whole sphere for a reason that belongs to the sphere rather than to the construction.
The azimuthal family is one function
Five azimuthal projections are taught as five viewpoints — from the centre, from the far pole, from infinity. They are one projection with five choices of how far out to draw a point at angular distance ρ, and each named property is a differential equation in that one function: f′ = f/sin ρ integrates to the stereographic projection and f f′ = sin ρ to Lambert's, from nothing but true scale at the centre.
Three conditions are one too many
Two distances fix a point in a plane and a third has no freedom left to be satisfied with. Chamberlin's trimetric construction averages the three positions that satisfy two conditions each, and the spread between them — never zero anywhere, 22 km over North America, growing as the cube of the region — is the price of the extra clause.
A circle of a distance is not a circle
Eleven essays in this field have followed a route across a map. A range ring is not a route — it is the edge of a set — and drawing one exposes a failure the route essays cannot: the same ground distance comes out 4.17 times longer in one direction than another on a common projection, and 13.03 times at 70° north.
The condition does not always decide the map
Write a family as a shape with an unknown function in it and every classical property becomes a differential equation. In three families the equation has one solution and the named projection is what comes back. In the fourth it has a whole function of solutions, which is why that family has forty members and the others have three.
The best flat picture is not a map
A set of dots whose separations are as nearly right as separations can be made beats every projection in this collection — by a factor of thirteen on four world cities, and by eight per cent on sixteen. The collapse between those two numbers is not about cartography. It is that a picture of n places has 2n − 3 free numbers and n(n − 1)/2 distances to spend them on.
Five distances of six, and never more
A flat picture of n places has 2n − 3 free numbers and n(n−1)/2 distances, so it can be exactly right about 2n − 3 of them and no more — five of six for four places, twenty-nine of a hundred and twenty for sixteen, and 3.98 per cent for a hundred. The bound is reached by a construction with no fitting in it, and an azimuthal equidistant map spends only n − 1.
An equidistance line belongs to a surface
A maritime boundary is very often defined as the line equidistant from two coasts — a description with no coordinate in it and no curve to choose between. It has a third ambiguity: equidistant measured how. On the ellipsoid, on the sphere, and with a ruler on three different charts, the same four basepoints give lines up to 39.6 kilometres apart and 2,816 square kilometres of seabed between them.
