Baseline — where it appears

The line between two stations, whose length and bearing are what a survey actually delivers rather than either endpoint's coordinates. Its uncertainty is not the two endpoints' uncertainties combined, because their errors share a datum and are correlated.

Two routes to one grid distance, 76.7 kilometres apart. The first four bars are the tape's chain: the chord between two marks, the height difference taken off it, the reduction to the ellipsoid, and the projection's own scale applied. The last is the satellite route — project both marks and subtract — which needs none of those steps because the observation already contains the positions the chain exists to supply. They agree to 0.17 millimetres, and that agreement is what makes the chain checkable at all: two routes to one number, sharing no arithmetic.

The chain the satellite does not have

The four-step reduction from a tape reading to a grid coordinate exists because a tape does not know where it is. A satellite observation does, so the same distance can be got by projecting both ends and subtracting — and the two answers agreeing to a fifth of a millimetre is the first check the chain has ever had.

The same baseline, turned. The part of a 20 km height difference a degree-360 geoid model omits, against the direction the baseline runs, at four anisotropy ratios. A ratio of one is the model rung 9 used and is a flat line — the isotropic covariance cannot depend on a direction, by construction, which is the whole of the objection. At a ratio of two the same baseline omits 165 millimetres along the grain and 241 across it.

The correlation is not the same in every direction

Every number in the previous rung came out of Σ cₙ Pₙ(cos ψ) — a covariance that depends on the angular distance and nothing else. Ground has grain: at a modest anisotropy the same 20 km baseline omits 165 millimetres along it and 241 across, and the isotropic answer understates the worse direction by 18.4 per cent.

How long a network has before it breaks its own tolerance. The years until the worst baseline in a 400-kilometre network exceeds five millimetres plus one part per million of its length, which is an ordinary first-order specification. A boundary zone breaks it in 16 years; a plate interior takes 1819; a rigid plate never does, at any speed, because a rigid body keeps every distance it has. Bars are clipped at five thousand years.

A grid stops fitting the ground it was laid on

A hundred-kilometre baseline across a plate boundary changes by 815 millimetres in fifty years, and the same baseline on the fastest plate in the model changes by nothing at all in the same fifty. The interval before an ordinary first-order specification is broken is six years in one place and never in the other.

The bias is σ² over the length, over two decades. The amount by which a measured baseline is longer than the true one, against its length, for a twenty-millimetre error on each end. The line is the second-order prediction σ²/d. The measured bias times the length is constant to a factor of 1.0014 across the whole range, and it sits 8.2 per cent below the prediction — which is the fourth-order term the expansion drops. The estimate is antithetic, so the first-order scatter cancels exactly and a bias of thirty-seven microns is measured at a t-statistic of 349.

A length measured from noisy points is too long

A distance is a square root, a square root is concave, and the average of the distances is not the distance between the averages. The gap is a bias with one sign: 37 microns on a ten-metre baseline with twenty-millimetre marks, following σ² over the length across two decades, and it adds rather than cancelling — so the same boundary is 1.5 parts per million longer when it is measured in more pieces.
