A projection's error after registration is one smooth field, not an error at each place
Sixty-four places scattered across the same region, and the error each projection leaves after a shift, a turn and a size have been fitted, drawn from where the places' own distances put them. Left: the regional Lambert conformal conic, 6.7 km in root-mean-square, drawn 90 times its length. Right: Mollweide, 147.1 km, drawn 4 times. In both, neighbouring places are displaced alike: the agreement between each place's displacement and its nearest neighbour's is 0.85 and 0.91, where errors drawn independently at each place give a value near nought.
It is one of 86 figures drawn by the same construction, and the drawing above is this one with nothing changed.
1 essay calls it. Every call below passes it something, because a placement that passes nothing draws whichever member of the family the generator happens to default to rather than the one its essay argues about.
